The dental school has two programs that enable students to go out into the community to promote oral health awareness and improve access to dental care.
The S-Miles To Go program provides essential dental care to underserved communities via two advanced mobile dental vans. The vans are equipped with dental chairs, a panoramic X-ray machine, a sanitization station, a waiting area, and a powered chair lift for individuals with disabilities to provide exams, cleanings, fillings, sealants, fluoride treatments, and extractions. Care is provided by School of Dental Medicine students, pediatric and general dentists, hygienists and assistants.
The program enhances access to care and gives students valuable experience working with vulnerable populations, including families on Buffalo's East Side, low-income seniors, homeless individuals and people with disabilities.
Each November, the School of Dental Medicine hosts its Dentistry Smiles on Veterans event to provide military veterans with free, comprehensive oral health care services from the School of Dental Medicine and community-based providers.
