About Us

Blue bison with UB flag drapped over it.

The health sciences at the University at Buffalo encompass six schools that collaborate and synchronize efforts to push the boundaries of scientific discovery and innovation, creating better health outcomes for local and global populations.

Working together, the health sciences prepare students to be change makers in health sciences professions and disciplines, and we empower our faculty and researchers to drive discoveries from the labs to the marketplace.

By leveraging its expertise in education, research, clinical services and community engagement, the University at Buffalo plays crucial roles in promoting better health outcomes and fostering a healthier environment for the residents of Western New York.

Here is how the university takes care of individuals and families in Buffalo and beyond:

  • Education and training: Six health sciences schools train future doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, social workers and other health care professionals — many of whom go on to practice in the region, providing high-quality health care services to the local community.
  • Research: UB health sciences researchers conduct cutting-edge research in various health-related fields, including aging, addiction, neurosciences, artificial intelligence, women’s health and public health. Their discoveries and innovations are leading to improved treatments, preventive measures, and a better understanding of health issues affecting our local population.
  • Community outreach and clinical services: UB health sciences teams operate several community-based clinics and centers that provide affordable health care services to underserved populations. These include Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences' clinics, the Dental School clinics, mobile dental and public health vans, and the Speech-Language and Hearing Clinics.
  • Health promotion and education programs: UB's School of Public Health and Health Professions offers programs and initiatives aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles, preventing chronic diseases and addressing health disparities in the region. These efforts often involve community partnerships and collaboration with local organizations.
  • Interprofessional collaboration: UB’s health sciences schools are deeply embedded in an interprofessional educational model for our students. This approach promotes a holistic understanding of health and helps prepare them to work effectively on the interdisciplinary health care teams of the future.
  • Community partnerships: UB collaborates with local health care providers, community organizations, and government agencies to address specific health challenges facing Western New York. These partnerships facilitate the exchange of knowledge, resources, and best practices for improving community health.
