Yotam Ophir on Journalism’s Struggles, Upcoming Talks, and Book Release

Yotam Ophir, Associate Professor of Communication, was quoted in as recent  about how media outlets lack racial diversity amid the backlash following MSNBC’s canceling of Joy Reid’s show. 

He took the opportunity to highlight broader issues in journalism.

Yotam Ophir, an associate professor at the University at Buffalo’s Department of Communication, commented that while there’s no clear proof race was a factor, concerns are valid. He noted that journalism is struggling due to shrinking newsrooms and financial challenges. Ophir emphasized the importance of diversity in media for a strong democracy and urged journalists to continue informing the public, especially in difficult times.

“Journalists play a critical role in democracies, as irreplaceable mediators between the public and the governments, but if the media [fails] to include the voices of non-white people (or in other cases, of non-male people), it cannot adequately fulfill this important role.”
