Recording Options

Audacity is a free recording app that is available for download in the Microsoft Store or as a download available in the ITCS Field Services Software Center.

Installation

1. Field Services has made this app available for people to install on their own and without the need for administrator privileges. Press the Windows key, type Software Center and the Software Center app wil appear as the Best Match in the search results.

2. Open it, select Applications in the upper left, search on audacity and it will be the only result.
3. Click on it and you will be presented with the option to Install it.

If install fails or you do not have access to the Software Center app, contact your department IT staff for further assistance.

Prompt Preferences and Recording

  1. Select Edit  > Preferences and set the following:
    • Audio Settings:
      • Recording: 
        • Device: Microphone (Cisco Headset)
        • Channels: 1 (Mono)
    • Quality > Sampling:
      • Project Sample Rate: 8000 Hz
      • Default Sample Rate: 8000 Hz
  2. Click OK to save your changes.
  3. When ready, press the Record button to begin and then the Stop button to end.
  4. Use the Play button and listen to your prompt as a sanity check before moving on to the export step.

File Export

When you are satisfied with the recording begin the export to save it locally on your PC:

1. Select File at the upper left and select Save Other  > Export as
WAV

2. Browse to the desired location on your PC to save the file

3. Supply an appropriate File name
4. Change the Save as type to WAV (Microsoft).
5. Under Format Options, for Encoding select U-Law
6. Click Save
