2024 Research & Innovation Report

The University at Buffalo’s latest Research and Innovation Report highlights a year of transformative achievements that are driving economic growth, scientific discovery, and real-world impact. The report showcases UB’s leadership in advancing deep-tech commercialization, supporting startups, and fostering industry collaborations through its Business and Entrepreneur Partnerships (BEP), which has guided more than 400 ventures and created over 400 jobs since 2006, while generating an annual economic impact of $200 million. These accomplishments underscore UB’s pivotal role in translating research into solutions that benefit society, strengthen regional and state economies, and address global challenges.

Where Curiosity Meets Cutting-Edge Research

At UB, we push the boundaries of what's possible. From pioneering robotics and AI to uncovering the secrets of our world, curiosity drives us forward. Here, at one of the nation’s leading public research universities and New York’s flagship, is where it all begins.

Our research makes life better - Assistant Professor of Physics Priya Banerjee is putting this technology to work in his studies of droplet-forming proteins. This emerging class of biological molecules may play a role in diseases ranging from cancer to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but little is known about how the proteins assemble into liquid-like droplets. Research Insights and Discoveries

Podcast: AI for Social Good

As a young computer scientist at IBM, Jinjun Xiong was impressed when the company’s Watson computer won “Jeopardy!”. But he also thought we should be using AI to help people, not beat them. Today, as the director of UB’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, he’s spearheading multiple AI projects that do just that. In this episode of Driven to Discover, he talks to host Cory Nealon about all the ways AI can make our lives better, and why we shouldn’t be so afraid of it.

Podcast: Urban Classical Music

When it was Jeff Scott’s turn to choose an instrument, the sixth grader picked the French horn because no one else had. Today, he is one of the nation’s premier French hornists and a Grammy-winning composer. In this engaging episode of Driven to Discover, Scott shares his unexpected path to success and how his multicultural Queens upbringing shaped the wildly eclectic music he writes today.

Podcast: Weight-Loss Drugs

Growing up in a holistic household, Nicole Albanese didn’t know what a pharmacist was as a child. Now she’s a pharmacy researcher, specializing in diabetes, obesity and nutrition. In this eye-opening episode of Driven to Discover, Albanese discusses the pros and cons of modern weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy.

Podcast: Earthworm Ecology

Nick Henshue was a classic “nature kid" as a child. Now he’s an associate teaching professor of ecology and an expert in all things earthworm.
