New Program Development

UB has an extensive portfolio of education abroad programs, yet we continue to develop new programs abroad to accommodate the needs and interests of students.

Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs

Education abroad not only benefits students but also contributes to the internationalization of the UB campus. An increasing number of students come to UB looking to include study abroad as part of their university education. UB faculty play a crucial role in promoting study abroad by encouraging students to explore opportunities, assisting with the development of semester exchange programs, and leading short-term study abroad programs.

Creating A New Program Abroad

Overseas academic programs at the University at Buffalo are facilitated and administered by UB Education Abroad, which is part of the Office of International Education. Proposals for faculty-led study abroad programs should originate with faculty and carry the endorsement of the department chair.

Faculty interested in proposing a new study abroad program should meet with Adam Rubin, Assistant Vice Provost and Director of Education Abroad in the Education Abroad Office to discuss the intended proposal and timeline. Once it has been determined that the faculty member's new program concept is potentially viable, the UB Education Abroad team will create an online proposal application. Formal submission of a program proposal by the requested deadline is required.. Program proposals should be submitted as far in advance as possible; preferably no later than two full semesters before the program would begin (e.g. a summer program proposal should be submitted by May of the previous year). Please note that the UB Education Abroad office will review the proposal and make a final determination as to whether or not to advance the proposed program can move forward for the requested academic term. Due to a variety of factors, including potentially competing program offerings (same discipline or same location) or staff capacity, not all proposals will be advanced.

Key Questions

  • Will the program be attractive to a broad range of students?
  • Will the program location be attractive to UB students?
  • Does UB already offer similar programs (academic content / location)?
  • Is this a program that you or a colleague would be willing to offer every year or every other year?
  • What are the potential challenges or risks associated with developing this program?
  • Has the faculty member demonstrated a clear and comprehensive plan for helping to promote the program and actively recruit students?
  • Will the program require an additional procurement process in order to secure in-country academic or co-curricular support?
