Dr. Richard N. Schmidt Scholarship Fund

This fund, honoring the professor emeritus in the Department of Biostatistics, provides an annual student scholarship to a PhD student who has demonstrated academic excellence.

The Dr. Richard N. Schmidt Scholarship Fund recognizes Dr. Schmidt’s service to the University at Buffalo and the field of statistics, as well as his vital role in ensuring the ongoing success of the Department of Biostatistics and its students.

Established in 2006 by Dr. Schmidt’s friends and colleagues, the fund supports an annual student scholarship in the Department of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health and Health Professions. The award is given annually to a PhD student to recognize academic excellence, as reflected by qualifying exam scores and classroom performance in core courses of the curriculum.

Dr. Schmidt introduced computer studies at UB in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including giving the first lecture on computers at UB. Since UB had no computers at the time, he took students to the Remington Rand Corp. in downtown Buffalo to work on a UNIVAC I, which filled an entire room. Schmidt co-authored two books on computers and business, and learned about 50 computer programming languages during his career.
