What will I learn?

You'll typically start by learning about how people communicate, whether they're doing it one-on-one, in small groups, within an organization or through the media. From there, you can go deeper within one of those areas or focus on a related topic. Maybe you're fascinated by intercultural communication or nonverbal communication. Perhaps you want to study persuasion techniques, new technologies or public speaking. You can even study communication within a specific field such as health care, education or entertainment.

What can I do with a communication degree?

Strong communication skills are a requirement in nearly every field, from health care and sales to public service and law. The people who rise to the top are often exceptional writers and speakers who understand how to communicate with their clients, customers and people throughout their organization. As a communication grad, you’ll likely have a solid advantage in getting jobs (and promotions) throughout your career, whatever you do.

Of course, many students choose to focus on the communication industry and the incredible variety of choices available, from market research analyst to social media content creator. As a communication major, you’ll learn about options in many fields, including:

  • Advertising.
  • Business.
  • Digital media.
  • Government.
  • Journalism.
  • Marketing.
  • Media.
  • Non-profits.
  • Public relations.
  • Social media.
  • Technology.
