Struggles and stress can lead to resilience
This presentation explores the profound impact that deployment and military service have on family members. We’ll discuss emotional and psychological challenges, shifts in family dynamics, and the stressors faced during separation and reintegration. Attention will also be given to the unique experiences of spouses, children, and extended family members, highlighting both struggles and resilience. Resources and strategies to support military families will be shared to foster understanding and practical support.
About Delcey Pulvino
SGM (R) Delcey Pulvino, BA ’05, MSW ’07, is a native of Niagara Falls, NY. She joined the United States Army on October 26, 1986. She attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Dix, NJ and completed Advanced Individual Training as an Administrative Specialist at Fort Jackson, SC.
SGM Pulvino’s held many duty positions to include First Sergeant, Operations Sergeant Major, Acting Command Sergeant Major and Chief Wardmaster of a Combat Support Hospital both in garrison and on overseas missions. She also had additional duty Unit Victim Advocate, Unit Prevention Leader, Voter Registration Officer, Sponsorship NCO, Training NCO, Operations NCO, and Battle NCO
Her military assignments include 338th General Hospital (Niagara Falls, NY), 865th Combat Support Hospital (Niagara Falls, NY and Utica, NY), 4202nd USAH (New York, NY), 8th MED BDE (Staten Island, NY, and 7301st Medical Training Support Battalion (Fort Dix, NJ). She deployed to Kuwait in 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and mobilized to Fort Dix, NY working in a Warrior Transition Unit in 2008 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2020, she was mobilized in support of COVID operations (Horsham, PA). SGM Pulvino has also served on various overseas medical exercises in Nicaragua, Bolivia, and Haiti as Senior Non-Commissioned Officer.
SGM Pulvino’s military education includes 71L (42A) Administrative Course, 68W (91B) Combat Medic Course, 68C (91C) Licensed Practical Nurse, National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) , Trauma Aims, Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Saver Course (PHTLS), Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification, Observer Controller/Trainer Course, DSCA Leadership Course, ASI Course, DSCA PH 1, Unit Victim Advocate Course (UVA), Sexual Harassment Assault Response Prevention Course (SHARP), Unit Prevention Leader Course (UPL), and Voter Registration online course (VRO). Her NCOES schools include Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC), Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course (BNCOC 2 phases) and Advance Non-Commissioned Officer Course (ANCOC 2 phases) and the United States Sergeant Major Academy.
Her civilian education includes an Associate’s Degree in Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counseling from Erie County Community College, Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Sciences and Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University at Buffalo. Her certifications are Certified Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor and she currently has her advanced practice licensure in social work.
Her civilian career in behavioral health as a substance abuse counselor, clinical social worker and licensed practical nurse spans over a 37 year period working for Community Missions of Niagara County, Niagara County Drug Abuse Program, Family and Children’s Services of Niagara County, Horizon Health Services, Amherst Veteran’s Court, and Buffalo Vet Center. She is currently working as a Social Work Coordinator for the Caregiver Support Program at the Western NY Healthcare System in Buffalo, NY. She has devoted 18 years of her career working with veterans and their families.
